Mauritius Hotel Recommendation: Attitude Hotels

Attitude Hotels invite you to live an authentic experience in Mauritius at one of their eight 3* & 4* sustainable hotels. There were so many concepts that I loved within this chain of hotels that cemented my reason for choosing to stay at a branch of their family - Lagoon Attitude. In particular it was their commitment to giving their guests the ‘opportunity to live like locals during their stay’ through a range of ‘Otentik Experiences’ that was the icing on the cake for me; Proudly showcasing the heritage and traditions of Mauritius through various experiences enabling travellers and tourists to delve deeper into the culture of the island – one of my main pillars defining why I love to travel. The 5 Otentik (authentic) experiences: Otentik Bazar A dedicated space within each hotel allowing local artisans and entrepreneurs to showcase their creations: local handicraft, wicker baskets, home-made jams, recycled bags and much more! Not only does this help the local economy, the community and the dreams of talented entrepreneurs, but 5% of each purchase goes to the Green Attitude Foundation which in turn supports a number of sustainable development projects across the island. Otentik Dinner Your chance to share a meal with a local family. A few of the hotel employees, referred to as family members warmly welcome you into their home and cook you a delicious dinner. It’s the perfect chance to learn about their traditions and ways of life. You even have the opportunity to help with the preparation of the meal if you want to get really stuck in! Otentik Discovery On arrival to the hotel you will be encouraged to download the free Otentik Discovery app, created by the Attitude team. Using the app, you’ll be able to find those hidden gems that only locals know about, allowing you to discover even more of the island than any other tourist! Otentik Fooding Mauritius is one of the most multi-cultural islands in the world. Authentic Mauritian cuisine derives from a fusion of Indian, Chinese, European and African flavours. Each property has a section with its own street food vendor style set up called Taba-J, this was one of my favourite features at Lagoon Attitude with the aromas wafting through the air, enticing you to a corner of the beach for your tastebuds to be tantalised. You can even have a go at making traditional food during a cooking lesson with one of the chefs. As much of the food as possible is locally sourced, unless it cannot be produced on the island. Otentik Music The Attitude Hotels group marvel in celebrating Mauritius’ rich diversity of ethnicities, languages and traditions. Showcasing traditional music, as well as local up and coming talent is just another way they do so. During your stay, don’t miss out on their weekly Sega show where you can learn how to play the ravanne, a traditional Mauritian tambourine or simply sip on a cocktail, allowing the rhythm and dances to captivate you.

More on Lagoon Attitude

As I mentioned in my post THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, Mauritius was part of a multi-centre trip for my first ever family holiday with both parents. I was 22years old at the time and whilst many of the other properties were appealing, we decided to go for an adults-only experience with the hope of a more relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. That is exactly what we got and a lot more at Lagoon Attitude! If I were to describe our stay in one sentence, it would be: A 4* hotel with 5* service. No request was too big to handle and the care we received from the staff clearly demonstrated that not only does the hotel treat its employees like family members, but their guests too!

Two of my favourite ‘foodie’ and Instagram worthy spots on the resort are Taba-J, which I have already mentioned; the street food truck, where you can indulge your tastebuds on all kinds of typical Mauritian street food such as rotis, faratas, curries and of course the delicious dholl puris. The second is Sea Breeze bar where you can take in panoramic views of the hotel, swimming pool and lagoon. It provides the perfect atmosphere to end the day swinging on a hanging chair sipping on a cocktail – tell the bartenders your preference of spirit and taste and they will curate a delicious drink just for you! As night falls, curl up on a bean-bag and toast the Indian Ocean under the starry sky.

Last, but not least. With the rise of eco-friendly and sustainable tourism, I have to mention the sustainability commitment at Lagoon Attitude hotel; One of their most eco-committed properties. The hotel has been Travelife Gold certified since 2017 and Lagoon Attitude is continuing its focus on sustainable tourism. The group set themselves a challenge to create a Positive Impact on the local environment, community and economy. Some of their implementations I have mentioned above, but there are so many more ways they are achieving their goal. A few more of which include: banning single-use plastic, so you won’t find any small bottles of shampoos and sachets in your room. You’ll receive a reusable water bottle upon arrival which can be refilled at the onsite water fountains and the products used in the spa are all locally made, using therapies inspired by their ancestors.

Whether you’re a traveller like me, who loves to delve deep into the culture and get to know the locals, perhaps you’re an eco-conscious traveller or a bit of both, I hope you choose one of the Attitude Hotels for your stay on the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.

Now you know where you’re staying, how about some inspiration on places to see and things to do during your holiday in MAURITIUS: JOURNEYING FROM NORTH TO SOUTH.
