THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Updated: Oct 13, 2022

“A picture is worth a thousand words” - Frederick R. Barnard

By definition, photography is the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.

Photography can be seen as a visual method of storytelling. For many it is an outlet to share our perspective of the world. A means to express ourselves when words fail to do so. Videography is defined as the process or art of making video films. I like to interpret it as photography with movement; a dance of imagery to its own rhythm.

The connection between photography, videography and dance, when added with a dash of culture, is that they are all a form of communication. In many cultures, there are forms of dance which are based on the idea of retelling stories of the past - of the Gods and the people - passed down generation by generation. Similarly, with photography/videography, whatever has been captured serves as a memory - as the saying goes ‘take a picture, its lasts longer’.

Imagery as an element plays an integral role in the expansion of our minds, creativity and imagination. We are not born able to speak, but to see, taking in the world around us. Learning as we mimic our parents, siblings and others who come into our path. If you think about it, we were designed with our own unique internal cameras – our eyes.

Our sense of vision is a powerful tool which enables us to take mental snapshots that we carry around with us to reflect back on at any given time. We can be influenced both positively and negatively, simply by what we perceive the experience to be.

Inspiration can be found all around us, sometimes it’s staring us right in the face, at other times it may come unexpectedly. Either way, that burst of creativity that ignites within is an indescribable feeling. Hence the need to capture it!

Whether you are just starting out or have been practicing for a while.

Whether it is your job or a hobby.

Continue sharing and inspiring, you never know who you will touch with your work of art.
