WHAT’S YOUR TRAVEL STYLE?

Updated: Apr 5

We’ve all heard of the typical holiday styles which can range from city breaks to honeymoons, with all inclusive, beach escapes and solo travel leading the forefront of most types of holidays booked. But have you ever stopped to think about your overall preferred travel style or which category the next holiday you have in mind would fall into?

As an avid traveller, one question I’ve recently been asking myself is, "What's your travel style?" And though I know my passions behind travel; where each destination has something different to offer, I’d say that my travel style changes accordingly. For me, travel isn't just about ticking destinations off a list; it's about immersing myself in the pulse of a place. Whether it's gazing upon vibrant street art in the Dutch Caribbean (Aruba, Bonaire & Curaçao), getting lost in the bustling markets of Thailand, or soaking in the ethereal beauty of Fiji's landscapes - authentic travel is key.

Whatever your preference may be, there is no denying that the way we travel says a lot about who we are. Let’s take a look into the various kinds of travel styles and how each one can enrich our experiences and shape us as individuals.

Cruising

Starting off with a familiar, fast-growing favourite! For those seeking a more relaxed and luxurious travel experience, cruising can offer the perfect blend of comfort and adventure. Set sail on a cruise ship and explore multiple destinations while enjoying top-notch amenities and entertainment. Whether you prefer a tropical island getaway or a European river cruise, cruising provides a convenient way to see multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. From gourmet dining to onboard activities, cruising caters to a variety of interests and preferences, making it an ideal option for travellers looking to unwind and explore simultaneously.

Group Tours

Group tours can be a great option for travellers looking to explore a new destination with the guidance of experts and the convenience of pre-planned itineraries. These tours are ideal for those who prefer a structured approach to their travels and want to make the most of their time in a new place. By joining a group tour, you can take advantage of insider knowledge, local tips, and the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share your passion for travel. Group tours can also provide a sense of security and companionship, making them a popular choice for solo travellers or those looking to connect with others. Wildlife Spotting

Wildlife spotting offers travellers the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance of ecosystems and the interconnectedness of all living beings, each encounter fosters a sense of awe and appreciation for the natural world. Nature has a way of humbling and inspiring us, and wildlife encounters are some of the most memorable moments of my travels. From the majestic elephants in Thailand’s sanctuaries to the playful orangutans in the jungles of Borneo, it’s safe to say that each encounter has left a humble mark on my soul.

One of the defining characteristics of wildlife spotting is its emphasis on conservation and responsible tourism. Travellers who engage in this style of travel should support ethical encounters that prioritise the well-being of animals and their habitats. This might involve joining guided wildlife safaris led by knowledgeable local guides who respect wildlife viewing guidelines, supporting eco-friendly accommodations that promote conservation efforts, or participating in volunteer programs dedicated to wildlife conservation.

Adventure/Sports-based travel

For thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies, adventure travel offers a unique opportunity to push boundaries and experience the world in an exhilarating way. From mountain climbing to bungee jumping, adventure travel challenges us to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. Whether it's exploring remote wilderness areas, embarking on epic hiking trails, or diving into the depths of the ocean, adventure travel opens up a world of excitement and discovery.

Another way to scratch that itch for an active and adrenaline-filled experience, could be through sports travel. From skiing in the Alps to watching the Formula 1 Grand Prix or watching the FIFA world cup, sports travel also allows enthusiasts to push their limits while immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the world.

By blending physical activity and cultural exploration, these action-packed travel styles appeal to thrill-seekers and fitness enthusiasts alike, providing a unique way to connect with nature and communities around the globe. Through such thrilling experiences, you will not only create unforgettable memories, but also cultivate a sense of courage and resilience that will stay with you long after your journey ends!

Creative Exploration

The creative travel style encompasses various forms of artistic expression, including photography and painting, to capture the essence of a destination in unique and personal ways.

Whether you're holding a camera or a paintbrush, creative travel allows you to see the world through a different lens – one that celebrates beauty, diversity, and the fundamental connections of humanity. By embracing creative exploration as part of your travel experience, you can unlock new perspectives, foster connections with locals, and create lasting memories that transcend borders and boundaries. Plus, they also give you the opportunity to share your creations with others and inspire them to see the world in a different light. No wonder social media platforms are blowing up with travel content creators!

Culinary Travel

When exploring new culinary delights and immersing yourself in the vibrant flavours of different cultures, culinary travel opens up a world of possibilities for gastronomic exploration and appreciation. From savouring street food delicacies in bustling markets to dining at Michelin-starred restaurants, the experience of trying local dishes can be a highlight of any travel adventure. Food has a unique way of bringing people together, and engaging in culinary explorations allows you to connect with the heart and soul of a destination. Whether you're sampling authentic dishes cooked with secret family recipes or learning to whip up traditional meals in a cooking class, culinary travel offers a sensory journey that can deepen your understanding of a place and its people.

As you embark on your foodie travel experiences, keep in mind that the way to a destination's heart is often through its stomach! By seeking out local eateries and embracing the dining customs of different regions, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of global cuisine. So, as you plan your next adventure, consider how culinary travel can add a delectable dimension to your escapades.

Historical Immersion

History isn't just confined to textbooks; it's alive in the cobblestone streets, ancient ruins, and cultural heritage sites that dot our planet. Each country uniquely showcases how its’ past intertwines seamlessly with the present.

One of the key aspects of historical travel is its focus on immersive experiences that bring history to life. Whether you're wandering through the ancient ruins of Rome, exploring the medieval castles of Europe, or retracing the footsteps of explorers along the Silk Road, each destination offers a tangible connection to the past.

By visiting archaeological sites, museums, monuments, and heritage sites around the world we are able to journey through time, tracing the footsteps of ancient civilisations, uncovering the stories of bygone eras, and understanding the cultural, political, and social dynamics that have shaped our world. We gain a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and heritage preservation. By engaging with local communities, attending cultural events, and learning from knowledgeable guides, travellers gain insights into the traditions, customs, and legacies that define a destination's identity.

Faith-based travel

Faith-based travel allows travellers to explore their spiritual beliefs and connect with cultural practices in a meaningful way. Whether visiting sacred sites, participating in religious ceremonies, or engaging with local communities, this type of travel can offer a profound sense of purpose and spiritual fulfilment. By incorporating faith-based elements into your adventures, you can deepen your understanding of different cultures and traditions, fostering personal growth and transformation.

Holistic travel

One aspect of travel that encompasses a holistic approach is integrating wellness activities into your itinerary. Engaging in yoga retreats, mindfulness sessions, or spa treatments can not only relax your body but also rejuvenate your mind and soul. Taking time to unwind and recharge during your travels is essential for maintaining balance and enjoyment throughout your journey. Whether it's lounging on a pristine beach, indulging in a luxurious spa treatment, or simply taking a leisurely stroll through a beautiful park, incorporating moments of relaxation into your itinerary can enhance your overall travel experience.

Slow Travel

In today's fast-paced world, the concept of slow travel is gaining popularity among adventurers seeking deeper connections and authentic experiences. Slow travel emphasises quality over quantity, encouraging travellers to immerse themselves in local culture, savour each moment, and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.

One way to embrace slow travel is by incorporating multiple flight stops into your itinerary, allowing you to experience diverse destinations along the way to your final destination. By taking the scenic route, you can discover hidden gems, interact with locals, and create lasting memories beyond conventional tourist attractions.

In essence, it’s rare that any one person has a travel style that is confined to a single category; travel is a mosaic of experiences that celebrate the diversity of our world, with every journey leaving an imprint on our lives that (hopefully) broadens our perspectives.

So, fellow adventurers, as you embark on your own voyages of discovery, remember to embrace the multifaceted tapestry of travel. Whether you're chasing sunsets, tracking wildlife, or delving into history, may your journeys be as boundless as your imagination!
